Multicultural & Dream Center
Segment #5 from College of San Mateo
Transcript
Now we will hear from two students who have found College of San Mateo’s Multicultural and Dream Center to be a social hub of their student experience. CSM is helping Socorro and Auner find their majors, grow their skills, and provide opportunities to participate in an amazing student-led conference. Let’s hear more.
– Thank you, Alex. Hi, everyone.
– What’s up y’all?
– While growing up, education was very important to me, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to be, which is why I chose CSM because it would allow me to focus on my education while also exploring different career paths.
– I always loved computers, and thanks to the counselors here, I found that computer science was my passion. When I’m not in class, I’m hanging out and studying at the Multicultural and Dream Center.
– When I first came to CSM, I was really shy and reserved, which is why I decided to apply at the Multicultural and Dream Center as a scholar intern. In this role, I was the co-lead for the Rise and Revolution conference, which is a three day long conference meant to radicalize, revolutionize, and reimagine what collective liberation means.
– This year’s conference centered around the themes of mutual aid, transformative justice, LGBTQ liberation, body liberation, and housing justice.
– [Socorro] I enjoyed doing this because it allowed me to learn about what it takes to organize a conference. I have met some of the closest friends through this internship, not just with my coworkers, but with the community of students that come into the center. It has allowed me to grow in my skills while centering around issues that I’m passionate about.
– CSM has taught me a lot and helped me grow. Coming here was the best decision of my life.
– When I first came to CSM, I was really embarrassed that I didn’t go to a four year university like others. But now, looking back at the past two years of my life, I’m really grateful that I chose this path. Not only have I been able to grow in my education, but I’ve also been able to grow as a person.
– [Both] Back to you, Alex.
– Keep up the great work, Auner and Socorro. From finding computer science as a major to leading a three day social justice conference. I love hearing about the opportunities that CSM provides to help students find their purpose. Thank you both for sharing your experiences.
