Transcript
Let me introduce you to Johnrey, a singer, actor, activist, model, content creator, and all around entertainer. Cal State Fullerton has many programs that create engagement opportunities to empower, educate, and activate students in the areas of social justice, equity and self-expression. Johnrey, tell us more about how Cal State Bulletin supports students’ passion for individuality and entertainment. Take it away.
– Thank you so much for that introduction, Alex, and hello future Titans. Growing up with a big personality, I always have known that I wanted to be a performer and entertainer. I would seize every opportunity that I had to perform at every talent show I could join. I then got into fashion and modeling that showcased the power and the beauty of authentic self-expression, especially as a queer person of color. I knew in choosing a university, I would have to leave my hometown and move to a place with more opportunities. Moving hundreds of miles away from home can be nerve wracking. Well, it’s a good thing that Cal State Fullerton prides itself in creating a strong sense of belonging through diversity and inclusivity. CSUF housing provides themed housing communities to help develop a strong sense of community and support. I’m a part of the Ujima housing community, which aims to give Black identifying students a stronger connection to students, resources and staff on campus. Within this community, I have made strong friendships with other Black and queer students through weekly game nights and Ujima events. These friendships have been crucial to my wellbeing. The diversity initiatives and resource centers have played a huge role in my experience as a first year. The LGBTQ’s Resource Center’s Annual Drag Show gives an opportunity to students to showcase their talents. So I joined and I won the competition. I was able to be featured on the school newspaper, The Daily Titan and Tusk Magazine. This allowed me to share my story and my passion for authentic self expression. On top of providing resources in a powerful community, CSUF is nurturing my passion for entertainment and individuality. I’m grateful to be a part of CSUF’s renowned theater and dance program, which will help me reach my goal in becoming an entertainer and an advocate for individuality. Until next time, future Titans and back to you, Alex.
– Johnrey, thanks for sharing your inspiring journey. There’s incredible support here on campus through those themed housing communities and vibrant diversity initiatives. Cal State Fullerton is dedicated to supporting all of its students and is ranked number three in the nation for bachelor degrees earned by underrepresented students. Sounds like an amazing place to grow and thrive. Thanks again, Johnrey.
