Finding Your Purpose: The International Student Experience with Eden

Segment #7 from Drew University

Transcript

We can’t wait for you to meet Eden, a recent Drew grad from Dominica who majored in Media & Communications with a minor in Photography. He’s gonna share how he was challenged by faculty to find and follow his passions, all while navigating a new country for the first time. Take it away, Eden.

– Thanks Alex. Growing up on the island of Dominica, I’ve always had a fascination of gadgets and tools. I wanted to become an engineer, but it wasn’t until I took a photography class in high school that something shifted. When transitioning into my freshman year of university, I had one singular goal, take pictures. I wanted to take advantage of Drew University’s photography minor to really express myself. Although I planned to major in engineering, Drew’s media and communications program stole my heart. It was through that experience I met faculty and staff who changed my life through their mentorship. They all played a crucial role in helping me come out of my shell and discover my true self. When I started at Drew, I was accepted into the Action Scholars Program. The mentors and leadership team within the program truly encouraged us to explore innovative ways to become civically engaged. Even when we found something that interests us, they challenged us to try new things and expand our horizons. It was strange learning about civic engagement in a foreign country, but I learned about the political system, local government, and even had the opportunity to volunteer at high schools. This is when I found my calling to pursue an education focused on civic based learning and instruction. The Action Scholars program embodies everything Drew is, engaged and welcoming. What I’ve learned here at Drew is that at any point in life, you must choose to do better or be better. By choosing a positive attitude and placing your trust in both your peers and the greater Drew community, I promise you you’ll fight yourself. Sending it back to you, Alex.

– Thank you for highlighting all the amazing mentors that impacted your life, Eden. You really showed how the Drew community embraces students from all over the world and helped shine a light on your future path. Thanks again, Eden.
