– Thanks, Alex. Hello everyone, my name is Calel Olicia-Aramboles. I grew up in a military family, and as long as I can remember, there were two things I was really passionate about, sports and education. As a deaf student athlete, I came to Redlands knowing I could do the work and create change. I was excited by the challenge. I knew it wouldn’t be easy moving from a high school for deaf students to Redlands, but I found a welcoming community, with great support from classmates, faculty, and people across campus. I grew up moving and traveling across the US and overseas. Because of this, I’m majoring in International Relations. At Redlands, there are many study abroad programs, internships and other opportunities for this major and many others. Last summer I participated in a student panel at the International Internship Conference in Indiana. The conference included CEOs, founders, and organizers who also have deaf relatives, colleagues, and friends. It was marvelous to hear from them. Knowing I can flourish at a national conference, in the classroom, and on the football field is really exciting, along with making memories. One of my favorite things is teaching ASL. Many bulldog teammates attended ASL classes and tutoring hours. This is meaningful to me because I’m able to communicate more with my teammates on and off the field. I believe I’m the first one to teach this class. I’m proud I am making an impact on student lives, just as they have impacted mine. Here at University of Redlands, I feel like so many doors have opened up for me. Professors really care and engage with me a lot to help me achieve my goals, and because of University of Redlands, I’m not only learning how to change the world. I’m building communication skills and lifelong relationships. I really do enjoy my work on campus and at the same time pursuing my dreams. Back to you, Alex.
