Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University (AAMU) is a historic 1890 land grant institution of higher learning. AAMU was founded in 1875 during the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War by a former slave, Dr. William Hooper Councill. Situated on “The Hill,” only a short distance from downtown Huntsville, the site of the school’s founding, it is the largest HBCU in Alabama providing baccalaureate, master’s, educational specialist and doctoral level degrees. AAMU is nationally recognized for its academic programs, experienced faculty and staff, diverse student body, student organizations and state of the art facilities. Located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Roanoke College is an independent, four-year liberal arts school that has served students since 1842.
