Tusculum Students, Alumnus Share Experiences During ‘The College Tour’ Episode Filmed On Campus

By The Greenvile Sun I October16, 2023

Cameras rolled as nine Tusculum University students and an alumnus shared the strengths of the higher education institution and how it has equipped them to be career-ready professionals.

A four-person crew from “The College Tour” came to campus Monday, Oct. 9-Friday, Oct. 13, to capture the Tusculum story and the campus’ beauty. The crew heard passionate accounts about the university’s impact on these Pioneers’ lives and reasons prospective students should choose Tusculum. The crew will now work with representatives from the university on the post-production process that will lead to an episode of “The College Tour” featuring Tusculum airing in 2024.

“The enthusiasm from our Pioneers and the crew’s great work enhanced the quality of the filming and will result in an excellent program,” said Dr. Jacob Fait, Tusculum’s vice president of enrollment management and financial aid. “Participating in this show will take our student recruitment initiatives to the next level and enable us to share the value of a Tusculum education even more effectively. Prospective students will learn through ‘The College Tour’ that Tusculum’s active and experiential learning, civic engagement opportunities and one-on-one connections in a caring Christian environment will position them for success in their chosen fields.”

Students David Bowlin, Stephen Brewer, Isabelle Delbridge, Kobe Funderburk, Josie Norton, Grayson Patterson, Xavier Velazquez, Maggie Vickers and Todd Wallin as well as 2012 graduate Dionté Grey participated in short segments. They highlighted their backgrounds, their Tusculum experience and the multiple programs at Tusculum that transform students’ lives.

“I wanted to share my story and let people know what you can do at Tusculum and how campus life operates,” said Brewer, a junior studying sport science pre-physical therapy. “There are a lot of different programs at Tusculum to help you succeed. I want everybody to know you will have people around you to help you succeed. The faculty and staff have programs to back you up. Even though you are away from home, you will always have another support system here.”

Norton, a junior majoring in communication, with a concentration in theater, had similar thoughts.

“When they picked me, I realized they were wanting to hear the real story and how people really feel,” she said. “I’m proud to be able to show off all that Tusculum has been able to do for me and I’ve been able to do through Tusculum. I liked getting to know the crew for even just the little time we spent together. They were very supportive.”

Grey decided to participate because the show is an excellent opportunity for Tusculum to receive much-deserved exposure. It also allowed him to give voice to the alumni experience.

“It is important for alumni to continue to engage, so if I get that opportunity, I want to step into it,” said Grey, who serves as founder and executive director of UrbanPromise Los Angeles. “Giving back is something all of us should do, and that’s what my life is built on. Tusculum played such a huge role in shaping who I am as a man and as a person and has influenced so much of what I do with my life.”

The Tusculum episode will drop on Amazon Prime May 28, 2024, but the university will have access to the master episode and the segments within it in February to use on social media, the university’s website and other venues.

The show is hosted by Alex Boylan, who won CBS’ “Amazing Race” show at 23 and has enjoyed a diverse career that also includes hosting “At the Chef’s Table,” the No. 1 food series on PBS, and “Animal Attractions,” the No. 1 animal series on that network. He also received an Emmy nomination for his production work on “The Steve Harvey Show.”

“The College Tour” was born out of a personal experience for Boylan. His niece visited him in Los Angeles to look at potential colleges to attend, but she also wanted to see some in the Boston area, where he and her mother were raised, as well as in Tennessee. His sister told his niece that the money was not available to conduct that type of search. That stuck with Boylan, who wondered why there was not a television show about college campuses that one could watch from home.

Boylan joined the crew at Tusculum to film his segments of the show.

“Tusculum University has a beautiful campus in a really cool area of the country,” Boylan said. “The experiential learning stands out. You’re hearing from real students telling these stories. The story of Dionté, who went to LA and created this amazing organization to help others is a testament of the culture here.”

WNMU campus to be featured in Amazon Prime show

By Anya Loya, The Deming Headlight I October 13, 2023

Oscar Arteaga, a Western New Mexico University international graduate student, will be featured on “The College Tour: Mustang Edition.” He is seen at the WNMU Museum, where he works as a graduate assistant. (Annya Loya/Deming Headlight)

The original version of this story misstated the length of the show’s episode. It will appear in the show’s 11th season, rather than the 10th. This update also corrects the spelling of Jillian Bernstein’s name.

Western New Mexico University will be featured on “The College Tour,” an award-winning TV series from Amazon Prime. The Silver City campus will be part of the show’s 11th season and is the first New Mexico college or university to be featured.

The series focuses on a different college or university across the country in each episode. The show also features multiple students, highlighting their experience at their schools. The show’s concept arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, when opportunities to attend in-person campus tours were restricted, on top of financial barriers to travel, according to the show’s host, Alex Boylan.

Filming will take place Nov. 6 through the 10th at the Silver City main campus. The show will follow 10 students from different backgrounds around multiple campus locations. Filming will include content from both the production team and the university, according to Linda Brown, the university’s communication specialist.

The episode will be divided into ten segments, one per student, and each student will get to collaborate on the segment’s script, Brown said.

WNMU students were encouraged to audition for the episode in early September and participants were selected later in the month. Auditions were held online, with students submitting two-minute videos about their experience at WNMU.

“I think the most important thing is that the student has an interesting story to tell about their experience at WNMU,” Brown said, “and second, I think we want stories that resonate with a wide audience. And of course we want to recruit students who have a good on-camera presence.”

Selected students will be able to cover different topics from academics to club activities to dorm life at WNMU, according to Brown.

Oscar Arteaga, an international graduate student from Venezuela, was selected as one of the show’s participants. Arteaga transferred to WNMU in 2022 from Emporia State University in Kansas and will graduate with a master’s in interdisciplinary studies in December.

“This is my last semester and I wanted to share my experience, share what I’ve learned, what it’s like to be an international student and all the services the university offers us,” Arteaga said.

Arteaga works as a graduate assistant at the WNMU Museum, where he talks about the exhibitions and collections as well as other office duties. He is also the treasurer of the International Student Association on campus, an organization created just this fall.

“In our organization, we’re trying to embrace diversity and guide international students and every other student about the resources campus offers,” Arteaga said.

The organization hopes to host a fashion show that will feature international students wearing traditional clothing from each of their countries, Arteaga said.

Arteaga plans to enter a doctoral program at New Mexico State University or find a job within WNMU after graduation.

The show will be another opportunity for the university to “get the word out,” as Brown put it. Being a smaller school, Brown said Western doesn’t have a national platform for marketing WNMU.

“There’s incredible work being done at the university by our students, by our faculty, by our staff,” Brown said. “So it’s just not coming from marketing or the administration, it’s coming from the students.”

Jillian and Stacey Bernstein, a mother and daughter attending WNMU, will also be featured on the show. Gillian is finishing up her master’s in social work and will graduate in December, while Stacey is going through her first semester of college as a biology major.

Both women highlight how much support they give each other on and off campus. Stacey helps her mom take care of her three younger siblings while her mom is at work or school and Gillian supports her daughter closely as she advances in college life.

“I feel like I’ve met my goal of becoming a role model for her, despite all the challenges and hardships that I have faced. So, to kind of come full circle where, you know, when I was a kid in college, I was pregnant, took a break. She’s very successful and that makes me very proud,” Gillian Berstein said.

She added that she’s thankful to be part of her daughter’s college experience and that it’s good for her younger kids to see their older sister thrive in college.

“The College Tour: Mustang Edition,” a 30-minute episode, will air on Amazon Prime and other streaming services in the spring.

The College Tour to air ASU episode, produced entirely in Spanish

By Javier Arce, AZ Central I October 7, 2023

Since 2020, The College Tour has taken aspiring students and their families to college campuses across the U.S., allowing them to “tour” universities through the stories of students and alumni. This fall, Arizona State University is on that list of campuses with its own episode. Unlike the majority of its episodes, however, this one is produced entirely in Spanish and is narrated through the experiences of Latino students. The episode, dubbed “The College Tour en Español,” was screened at the Glendale ASU West campus on Saturday, where, according to ASU, hundreds of students and their family members were present.

The episode highlights the experiences of at least 10 students, like Pedro González Ochoa, a 22-year-old pursuing a master’s degree in biomedical engineering at Barrett, The Honors College of ASU, a child of Mexican immigrants and a first-generation college student. And that of Sandra Pérez, who is pursuing a master’s degree in program evaluation and data analysis.

“I knew immediately that I wanted to participate in The College Tour en Español. I just hope that this film reaches audiences around the world,” she said in an ASU news release.

The College Tour en Español

The episode, which is scheduled to air on Prime Video later this year, is not the first produced entirely in Spanish.

That honor, however, does remain in Arizona.

In September 2022, Maricopa Community Colleges was the first college system to be featured in an all-Spanish-language episode, spotlighting the experiences of Latino and Spanish-speaking students. ASU’s episode is the sixth to be produced in Spanish, according to The College Tour website, and the second produced in Arizona. The episode offers an extensive visual tour of ASU facilities — in Tempe, Glendale, Mesa and downtown Phoenix — where thousands of Latino students from various Latin American countries, as well as U.S. and Arizona natives, pursue their careers.

In 2022, Arizona State University was designated a Hispanic Serving Institution, when at least a quarter of its student population identified as Latino. ASU Online has also seen growth among Hispanic students, who represent nearly 23% of the total of online undergraduate students.

Following the premiere of College Tour en Español, ASU Executive Vice President and Provost Nancy Gonzales presented each participating student with a $1,000 scholarship to continue their studies, courtesy of ASU and the Helios Foundation.

‘The College Tour’ To Film Tusculum University Episode Starting Monday

By Tusculum University I October 7, 2023

Nine students and one alumnus will share what makes Tusculum University special and how their studies at Tennessee’s first higher education are enriching their lives during the filming of a national television show on campus.

Crews from “The College Tour” will be on campus Monday, Oct. 9-Friday, Oct. 13, to film segments with these Pioneers and Tusculum leaders as well as show student life and the campus’ beauty. They will describe how Tusculum provides active and experiential learning and inspires civic engagement in a caring Christian environment that prepares students to be career-ready professionals. “We’re thrilled to participate in this terrific opportunity to detail the value and affordability of a Tusculum education,” said Dr. Scott Hummel, Tusculum’s president. “The best way to achieve that is to hear from our students and alumni. They experience every day the pioneering spirit that is propelling them to succeed professionally through exceptional research initiatives, abundant community service opportunities and tremendous internships with excellent organizations.”

Speaking in the show will be students David Bowlin, Stephen Brewer, Isabelle Delbridge, Kobe Funderburk, Josie Norton, Grayson Patterson, Xavier Velazquez, Maggie Vickers and Todd Wallin as well as 2012 graduate Dionté Grey. Some of the students are local, and others come from other communities in Tennessee or other states.

Their messages will touch on the outstanding support they receive from multiple programs at Tusculum and how the university came through for them to make their college education possible. They will highlight the one-on-one connections students develop with their professors, the extensive approach to make new students feel at home from the moment they arrive and the way all athletic teams treat their student-athletes like family.

Students will tout Tusculum’s vibrant arts program, the ability to grow their faith, the strong campus life and the many locations for fun, relaxation and recreation off campus. The overarching message they will deliver is that Tusculum is the right university for a student to earn a degree.

When students graduate, they can put into action the skills and life lessons learned at Tusculum to make a difference in their community. Grey will share how his Tusculum education prepared him to create a new organization in Los Angeles that is making a difference.

Crews will also film segments with Hummel; Dr. Jacob Fait, vice president of enrollment management and financial aid; and J’Quen Johnson, assistant director of graduate and online enrollment.

“When you consider all a Tusculum education delivers, the best choice a student can make is to enroll at our university,” Fait said. “We are blessed with outstanding students, who use their years at Tusculum wisely to develop academically, socially and spiritually. They are backed every step of the way by expert and committed faculty and a dedicated staff who are focused on preparing students for the next step in their lives. This episode of ‘The College Tour’ will clearly show that.”

The Tusculum episode will drop on Amazon May 28, 2024, but the university will have access to the master episode and the segments within it in February to use on social media, the university’s website and other venues.

New film features students sharing personal stories about their ASU success in Spanish

By ASU News I October 2, 2023

“Do I belong?” Those three words ran through Pedro Gonzalez-Ochoa’s mind before he began his college experience at Arizona State University.

The 22-year-old is now working toward his master’s degree in biomedical engineering at Barrett, The Honors College. Not only does Gonzalez-Ochoa belong at ASU, he’s thriving — and his success is captured on film.

During a special red carpet premiere at ASU’s West campus on Oct. 1, hundreds of Hispanic families had the opportunity to watch the “College Tour en Español,” a 30-minute film narrated by Gonzalez-Ochoa and several other Sun Devils, which is scheduled for livestreaming on Amazon Prime later this year.

The film is the first produced by ASU exclusively in Spanish and it’s designed to reach Latino students and inspire them to go on to college.

The episode provides a sweeping visual tour of ASU where 10 Sun Devils share their personal academic journeys at the most innovative university in the country; one that has increasingly enrolled more students of Hispanic descent throughout the years.

Last year, ASU was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, which means at least 25% of its student body identifies as Hispanic or Latino. The university has also earned the prestigious Seal of Excelencia in education for the second year in a row.

But despite numerous accolades and advancements, there continues to be barriers for Hispanic students, both real and perceived.

“When my mother was 17 and pregnant, she made the decision to leave Mexico and give me a better life,” Gonzalez-Ochoa said.

He invited his mother to the film’s premiere where students were asked questions about their struggles after the viewing. Gonzalez-Ochoa said his mother faced financial hardship after coming to America. When he got to college, homework became difficult but he always kept his mother in mind and persevered.

“It’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of (graduating from college). These highs mean nothing to me if I can’t share them with her,” Gonzalez-Ochoa said.

The film focuses on student choices and personalized learning experiences at ASU’s distinct campuses, as well as the degrees available through ASU Online. The desire to learn with a focus on technology is one of the reasons why Mexican immigrant Sandra Perez opted to study at ASU.

Shortly after she began her studies, Perez’s husband passed away and she thought of quitting often. She is now earning a Master of Science in program evaluation and data analytics.

“As immigrants, we put obstacles in front of us that are not really there,” said Perez. “I knew I wanted to participate in the ‘College Tour en Español’ immediately. I just hope this film reaches worldwide audiences.”

Vanessa Ruiz, deputy vice president for outreach within ASU’s Educational Outreach and Students Services, presided over the discussion after the premiere and talked about the numerous resources available to Latino students at ASU.

“We intentionally provide one of the most world-class college experiences accessible to any and all students, and to students who are not yet qualified; we create pathways to admission,” Ruiz said.

“I am very thankful to ASU for all the financial aid I have received,” said Fatima Botello, an ASU undergraduate and Obama Scholar.

Botello is set to graduate in May 2024 with degrees in psychology and Spanish literature and culture.

“I am basically here on a full ride and, honestly, would not be here had it not been for ASU,” she said.

ASU’s affordability was highlighted several times during the film’s premiere. Ninety percent of Arizona residents receive some form of financial assistance or scholarships, and all Arizona residents that are Pell grant eligible pay $0 in tuition thanks to the Arizona Promise Program.

After the premiere, ASU Provost Nancy Gonzales presented each participating student with a $1,000 scholarship to continue their studies, courtesy of ASU and Helios Education Foundation. She stressed that Hispanic students do belong at ASU.

“Just listening to these stories shows that our model is working but having a 26% Hispanic student body rate is not enough. Those numbers need to continue to rise,” Gonzales said. “I am immensely proud of the incredible students who volunteered to tell their stories in order to inspire future ASU students. They represent the best of our Latino students, a community that now totals more than 31,000 students enrolled.”

Helios President and CEO Paul Luna also encouraged students who are still deciding on college to take the initiative and enroll at ASU.

“Whatever your reasons are for holding back, you must know that ASU is the type of university that works with every student and all families to make sure they come out successful,” Luna said.

When asked if all their efforts were worth it, all 10 students were in agreement.

“Claro que si,” they said. Translation: “Absolutely it was, yes!”

Amazon Prime’s ‘The College Tour’ Set to Showcase SVC in Upcoming Season

By Latrobe Bulletin I September 7th, 2023

“The College Tour,” an Amazon Prime original series that showcases select colleges and universities throughout the nation, will feature St. Vincent College in its upcoming 10th season, offering an intimate view of the institution. The show spent the entire first week of classes filming on the college’s campus.

“The College Tour” has garnered acclaim for its distinctive approach, showcasing individual colleges and universities through the authentic perspectives of current students at those institutions. This show is hosted by Alex Boylan, an Emmy-nominated producer who won CBS’ second season of “The Amazing Race.”

Boylan’s inspiration for the series was personal, driven by witnessing his nieces’ challenges in navigating the college search process, constrained by financial considerations. This was the catalyst behind his decision that higher education needed its own television series. “The College Tour” has now surpassed over 100 episodes and enables viewers to virtually tour campuses they might otherwise not have gotten the opportunity to explore.

In the upcoming season, St. Vincent College takes center stage, with 10 students and alumni sharing their individual stories as Bearcats. This 30-minute episode is set to offer an authentic glimpse into life at St. Vincent College.

Boylan, reflecting on the filming process at St. Vincent College, shared his enthusiasm.

“We had an amazing time on campus filming this episode of ‘The College Tour,’” he said. “This is a special place where students can thrive academically, grow spiritually and build lifelong friendships. The campus is gorgeous, with rolling hills and stunning views of the Laurel Highlands. The people are warm and welcoming, and I felt immediately at home the second I arrived.”

David Rahaman, a senior English education major of West Orange, New Jersey, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent St. Vincent College.

“SVC has been an extension of home and has helped shape me into the person I am today, he said. “This has been such a privilege, and I’m extremely grateful that I was able to help represent my college.”

Leading the on-campus filming was Liz Palmer, St. Vincent College’s social media and digital content manager. She noted the excitement and dedication displayed by the students during filming, emphasizing the profound impact their stories will have on prospective college students seeking their ideal educational home.

“I was so impressed with our students throughout this whole process – whether they were directly involved in filming or not,” Palmer said. “The passion they have for St. Vincent was palpable, and I’m so excited that they get to share that passion with potential future Bearcats.”

Senior Dom Oto, theology major of North Versailles and another of the episode’s participants, shared his perspective as well.

“Being a part of ‘The College Tour’ has shown me that I have a story to tell, a story that I hope will one day inspire another student like me to choose SVC,” he said.

“The students here are incredible,” Boylan remarked. “If you are a student looking for a challenging academic experience in a supportive and nurturing environment, then you must come visit St. Vincent College.”

St. Vincent College’s episode of “The College Tour,” which will be the last episode of the 10th season, is scheduled for a winter release on Amazon Prime Video.

The episode will feature the following students: Diana Mosten, junior international business major of Harrisburg; Isaiah McElroy, Class of 2023, former communication major of Hagerstown, Maryland; Rachel Andreola, senior mathematics major of Pittsburgh; David Collins, a senior English major of Oakmont; Marta Trembetska, sophomore marketing major of Lviv, Ukraine; Desonio Powell, Class of 2023, former communication major of Greensburg; Elizabeth Dacanay, sophomore biochemistry major of Beaver; Stacie Ramos, junior marketing and digital art and media double major of Chula Vista, California, and Rahaman and Oto.
