A new web series on Amazon Prime is helping students and families visit colleges across the country — from the comfort of their homes.
Created by Emmy-nominated producers Alex Boylan, Lisa Hennessy, and Burton Roberts, “The College Tour” explores colleges and universities through the eyes of their students, faculty, and alumni. The episodes — each featuring an individual institution — offer prospective students an intimate view of life at these campuses beyond what is already available on brochures, websites, and social media.
Colleges featured in the series include Florida Institute of Technology, Arizona State University, Grand Canyon University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and many more.
‘Leveling the Playing Field’
Executive producer Alex Boylan said, “The College Tour is the show you wished you had when applying for colleges in high school.” He explained how college visits can be expensive — sometimes upwards of $3,000 — which makes it a financial challenge for many low-income families. This series addresses the disparity by “leveling the playing field and providing a free, easy and fun way to tour some of the best schools across the country.”
Producers said the series will include more colleges in future episodes.
The first season of “The College Tour” is available on Amazon Prime. Viewers can also watch all episodes on “The College Tour” app and website.

Iowa State to be featured on “The College Tour” TV show
By Molly Blanco, Iowastatedaily.com| October 5, 2021
The TV series “The College Tour” began filming this week for an episode featuring Iowa State.
The show arrived on campus Monday and will continue production through Oct. 12.
“[‘The College Tour’] is an opportunity to share what makes your institution special, so we get to share the Iowa State story on a national stage,” Erica Fischer, director of enrollment marketing in the Office of Admissions said.
Fischer said filming will take place in many locations in and around campus, including “key areas” like Parks Library, the Campanile, Central Campus and State Gym.
The show will highlight many areas and locations on campus, but Fischer said filming will not impede the day-to-day operations at Iowa State.
“Campus will continue to function as normal,” Fischer said.
“The College Tour” will highlight many aspects of the Iowa State experience, from student identities to campus traditions. The show will also include information about the academic experience and student resources.
“Each of the segments that we have highlights a specific piece of the university,” Fischer said.
Fischer said all six of the undergraduate colleges will be represented, as well as the graduate college and veterinary medicine. The show will also feature programs like study abroad, honors, athletics and student organizations.
“We have innovation as one of our segments; that’s a really popular one for Iowa State,” Fischer said. “Being recognized as the University of Science and Technology, and innovation being such a critical piece of that, we really wanted to have a focus on innovation.”
“The College Tour” was created by Alex Boylan, a former winner of the reality show “The Amazing Race.”
Boylan said he had the idea to create the show when his niece was exploring colleges. She wanted to visit different schools across the country, but it was expensive and difficult to travel for college visits.
“The average college trip costs $3,000. The average high school student can’t go visit colleges,” Boylan said.
Then, the pandemic hit, and Boylan realized a way to make college visits more accessible.
“My poor little niece had a really tough time trying to figure out where to go to college,” Boylan said. “I started doing some research online with her, and that’s when the lightbulb went off: colleges and universities need their own television show.”
Iowa State was selected to be featured on the show after one of the producers reached out to President Wintersteen.
“[The producer] is a huge Iowa State fan and has some affiliation with Iowa State, and he really wanted to see us recognized in this area,” Fischer said.
Fischer explained that some prospective students do not have the opportunity to visit Iowa State in person, so “The College Tour” will provide another avenue for them to experience the university.
“This is a way for us to provide a look at what it’s like to be on campus,” Fischer said.
According to the show’s website, “each episode of The College Tour tells the story of a single college through the lens of its students.”
Students were selected to be featured on the show through an audition process. The students were chosen to represent and host a segment about different areas of the university.
“We did make sure that we had a broad representation. We wanted to make sure that all of the colleges were represented,” Fischer said.
“The College Tour” is currently in its second season. Iowa State is scheduled to appear in season four, and the episode is expected to air early next year.
The show will be available to watch for free on “The College Tour” website and Amazon Prime.

UC Davis Gives Virtual College Tour With New Show
CBS Sacramento | September 27, 2021
Join the Watch Party for UC Davis Episode of ‘The College Tour’
UCDavis.Edu by Julia Ann Easley | September 14, 2021
UC Davis is starring in an episode of The College Tour, and the campus is inviting Aggies and the Davis community to join a watch party at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26.
The event will preview the 30-minute episode and feature more fun — including performances by the UC Davis Marching Band and cheerleaders — in a livestream from UC Davis Health Stadium and other watch parties on campus and in Davis.
The event will be hosted from the stadium by Amy Gutierrez ‘95, the San Francisco Giants ambassador known to fans as Amy G. Special guests will be Chancellor Gary S. May and the series co-creator and host Alex Boylan, who won CBS’s Amazing Race in 2002 and now produces and hosts television and web shows. The watch party will also include chats with the 10 students and alumnae who shared their experiences of UC Davis in the episode. Expect to see Gunrock, too.
To attend the virtual event, register for free. Due to COVID-19 protocols, admission to the stadium is limited to a small number and by invitation only, but campus units and Aggies are encouraged to host their own watch parties. As Sept. 26 draws closer, hosts will be able to download a kit to help add Aggie flair to their events. Organizers from the Office of Strategic Communications promise not only merchandise giveaways but also “a few surprises.”
Those who join in on the festivities can watch for not only the episode’s featured participants (see earlier Dateline story for a list), but also other UC Davis faculty, staff and students captured on camera. There will also be opportunities to interact through social media.
The UC Davis episode is in the second season of the streaming series, born during the pandemic to help students and their families tour campuses virtually. It is expected to be available in November through Amazon Prime Video and the show’s own channel on Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire and more. (It is already available on The College Tour app.)
Read the Dateline story about the making of the episode.
The video highlights sweeping aerial views of campus; shows Kyla Kessler, co-captain of the women’s gymnastics team, doing backflips in the stadium; takes viewers inside the Horse Barn and up close with baby goats; showcases campus icons; and visits the Davis Farmers Market.
As the Aggies share their personal stories, they highlight important aspects of a UC Davis education including the breadth and rigors of academics, creating community, opportunities for hands-on learning and more.
