Sam Houston State University is one of the latest colleges to be spotlighted on “The College Tour,” an Amazon Prime television series created by Emmy-nominated and multi-award-winning producers. The university is featured in season 2, which will air beginning Nov. 8 on Amazon Prime and Roku.

In the episode, viewers visit historic Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, and meet 10 students from diverse backgrounds, sharing their personal college experience at Sam Houston State. Between academics, research opportunities, student life, athletics and making life-long connections as Bearkats, these students show what it’s like to be a part of a close-knit campus community.

“It’s a unique way to reach prospective students through digital mediums – something that current Gen Z’ers have come to expect. And, since the pandemic, traditional campus visits as we know them have changed to include virtual options. This series gives students, and their parents, the best of both worlds,” said Leah Mulligan, associate vice president for Enrollment Success.

The series is the brainchild of host Alex Boylan, who was part of the winning team on the second season of the reality TV show “The Amazing Race.” With each episode of “The College Tour,” Boylan takes viewers on campus to show what daily life is really like, told through the voices of actual students.

“Being a part of this was a great experience and opportunity to not only remember, but also showcase why I first fell in love with Sam Houston,” said education major Erin Griffin. “It also provides prospective students with an opportunity to envision themselves here at SHSU and see themselves through me and other fellow Bearkats. We made it to Sam Houston despite any struggles we faced, and they can too.”

The idea for the show came to Boylan after college visit discussions with his 16-year-old niece,

who wanted to tour various colleges all over the U.S. Due to the pandemic and the cost of travel, she wasn’t able to, so Boylan and his team used their production skills and talent to bring universities directly to students.

“This has been incredibly fun to produce and has become wildly successful by highlighting so many unique factors that make up the total college experience,” Boylan said.

Ryan Gutierrez, a doctoral student in the university’s nationally recognized Forensic Science program added, “It was fun working together with ‘The College Tour’ to tell my story. Hopefully prospective students can see all the great things we have to offer and consider joining the Bearkat family!”

GCU showcased in new Amazon Prime Video series

GCU News I November 10, 2021

(Nov. 9, 2021) – Grand Canyon University, a leader in virtual campus tours, is offering yet another way to view its highly rated campus in Phoenix. GCU is partnering with “The College Tour” streaming series on Amazon Prime Video to offer viewers an inside look at what life is truly like on campus.

Alex Boylan, host of “The College Tour,” stands in the middle of campus while filming the episode.

GCU’s episode (here’s the trailer) kicks off Season 2 of the “The College Tour” and can be viewed across “The College Tour” platform, including its website and mobile app; on IMDb TV, Amazon’s premium free streaming service; and on GCU’s YouTube channel. The 50-minute episode includes 15 segments about everything from academics and research to campus life and GCU’s Christian mission — told primarily through the eyes of students. GCU’s campus is ranked among the top 20 in the country by niche.com.

“GCU does a lot of things to make it easy for students and families to visit campus, but not everyone is able to do that as part of their college decision-making process,” said GCU President Brian Mueller. “We already provide live, interactive virtual tours to meet the needs of these families, but ‘The College Tour’ was another innovative way for young people to see the campus through the eyes of our amazing students and staff who speak from the heart about their experiences at GCU.”

The inspiration for “The College Tour” came when creator and host Alex Boylan’s 16-year-old niece started her college search. “Because of the pandemic and finances, she wasn’t able to travel to tour colleges. So, using our skills as executive producers, we created a series inspired by her and millions of other young people who are interested in attending college,” said Boylan, who is joined by fellow Emmy-nominated producers Lisa Hennessy and Burton Roberts on “The College Tour.”

In the GCU episode, Boylan describes Grand Canyon as “one of the largest and fastest growing universities in this country, and they’re dedicated to providing academic excellence while leading a movement of service and leadership with purpose. Their biblically rooted mission is built upon making a difference in the lives of others and unleashing an opportunity for quality and affordable education through a Christian worldview.”

The episode highlights the explosive growth of GCU, which has grown from fewer than 1,000 traditional students in 2008 to nearly 24,000 on its campus today, while online enrollment has now surpassed 90,000 students. That growth has occurred as the University has invested $1.5 billion into its campus infrastructure in the past 13 years without passing those costs on to students — freezing tuition costs on its ground campus during that time.

“The College Tour” also focuses on GCU’s vibrant campus culture and its Christian mission to help those who are less fortunate.

“This place is so special to me because it is a champion of inclusion, community and equal opportunity for all,” said Noah Wolfe, who was Student Body President in 2018-19 and is now working toward his master’s degree. “I’ve never experienced a culture like this, a Christian community of people who are deeply committed to serving one another.”

The episode also features current and former GCU students and one parent:

  • Erik Yost, a freshman engineering student who is using biotechnology and biofuel cells to send projects to the NASA space station
  • Maya Hinojos, a 2019 grad who is running her family’s furniture and mattress store
  • Andrea Northrup, a 2017 grad still connected to the University through its home-renovation partnership with Habitat For Humanity
  • Bethany Egeler Huffman, who declined opportunities at Ivy League schools so that she could experience GCU’s Christian mission
  • Joshua Gillespie, who speaks about building community on campus as president of the school’s nationally renowned Havocs student section
  • Weston Smith, an undergrad alum and current MBA student who launched his own Lux Longboards business that operates out of the University’s Canyon Ventures space
  • Kara Morrow, who came to GCU with a 4.62 high school GPA and a perfect score on the SAT reading section, chose the University for its challenging academic curriculum and served in a White House internship
  • Luis Pena, an immigrant who received an opportunity for a college education via one of GCU’s many Students Inspiring Students full-tuition scholarships
  • Melissa Pullon, a parent who shares how her idiosyncratic son Austin was welcomed inside and outside the classroom at GCU

Amazon Prime’s “The College Tour” highlights life at Miami

By Alice Momany, The Miami Student| November 9, 2021

Miami University hosted a premiere screening of Amazon Prime’s “The College Tour: Miami University” in Taylor Auditorium in the Farmer School of Business on Saturday, Nov. 6.

“The College Tour” highlights different college campuses across the U.S., and Miami’s episode is a part of the show’s third season.

The screening was free for the community and provided an inside look into life at Miami.

The event began with a speech from President Greg Crawford and concluded with a panel featuring some of the students who participated in the episode.

Hosted by Alex Boylan, winner of CBS’s Amazing Race, the episode opens on Upham Arch and follows alumni Julian Johnson and Sophie Kullman, several students and faculty member Jonathan Levy through various locations of campus including Central Quad, Armstrong Student Center, Alumni Hall, Uptown and more.

The episode focuses on campus life, entrepreneurial mindset, inclusivity, student organizations, sustainability efforts, undergraduate research, RedHawk spirit, career preparation and living in a college town.

Levy, Kullman, Johnson, and students Nina Ofosu Hemaa, Lydia Yamashiro and Hannah Lefkowitz participated in the panel and discussed their experiences filming the episode.

Lefkowitz, who talked about campus traditions in the episode, is an out-of-state student who saw this as an opportunity to help other out-of-state prospective students visit Miami virtually.

“I love Miami with my whole heart,”  Leftkowitz said. “And I love hearing it every day when people come to campus, but there are so many who aren’t able to, so this experience made me able to talk to everyone who can’t get the chance to get out here.”

Johnson, who talked about student organizations, said sharing his experiences was the best way to give back to the university.

“I was still in Oxford getting ready to move to Chicago, and I had so many wonderful opportunities throughout my four years experience here that provided me the chance to have the career I have now,” Johnson said. “I’m really grateful for that, so I thought talking about my experience would be the best way to wrap all of that up.”

Andres Montes, a prospective student, attended the event with his family to learn more about Miami. Although his sister is already a student, he wanted to make sure Miami was an option for him.

“I already have good expectations of the school since my sister goes here, and I really like the campus, but I want to confirm that it’s a good school for me and that I’ll like the environment,” Montes said.

Siadornhecker Patel, a prospective student from Cincinnati, also attended the event to learn more about Miami.

“We’ve already done a few college tours, but we wanted to get a more in-depth experience,” Patel said.

Patel’s parents are Miami Mergers and were interested in seeing how the university has changed.

“My husband and I came here thirty-some years ago, but we just wanted to see what new opportunities the university has to offer,” Jesal Patel, Siadornhecker’s mom, said.

Lauren Vajentic, a senior integrated science education major, and Caroline Reagh-Slager, a senior marketing major, attended the screening to support Yamashiro, who talked about inclusivity in the episode.

Both seniors thought the episode accurately represented life at Miami and hope prospective students see the opportunities for involvement Miami offers.

“I hope people see how involved you can be,” Reagh-Slager said. “I feel like every student [in the video] showed that they were involved in like five different things.”

Kullman, who talked about living in a college town in the episode, hopes people who watch it will see the endless possibilities Miami presents to its students.

“There are so many different opportunities at Miami, and I think the episode really captures that so well because we each talk about a slice of our life here,” Kullman said. “I want people to take away that there’s a place for them at Miami, no matter what that looks like.”

“The College Tour” wraps up production on campus

By Shelby Clark, USI Shield I November 9, 2021

The production team from “The College Tour” TV show finished filming an episode about the university Friday.

“The College Tour” is a national TV series that highlights colleges and universities across the country. The crew and executive producer began filming on campus Nov. 1, 2021, and finished Nov. 5, 2021.

The university selected 10 students to share the culture of campus with show producers. The students wrote their own scripts.

Elissa Tam, a senior biology major and president of Eagles in Action, was one of the 10 participating students. Tam said “writing the script was really easy because it all came from the heart.”

The selected students were filmed in two different ways for the episode. Students spoke directly to the camera about their experience at the university and were filmed doing their every day tasks on campus.

Tam was filmed for the episode on Nov. 2. Tam said the production team understood they were working with students who have no prior experience talking on camera and were really encouraging.

“There’s literally nothing I could say bad about the team,” Tam said.

David Bradley, a senior accounting major and vice president of Student Government Association, was also featured in the episode.

The team treated him like a “star.” He said they carried around his wardrobe for him and always made sure he looked nice.

“They understood that we’re all students, and we don’t have a lot of camera experience,” Bradley said. “So, they wanted to make sure that you didn’t look dumb.”

The crew allowed Tam and Bradley to bring their friends on set with them as extras. They said having their friends with them helped take away the nerves. Bradley said even with the nerves, he would do the whole experience again if he could.

Alex Boylan and David Bradley on the balcony of the Business and Engineering Center. Alex Boylan is an Emmy nominated producer and host of “The College Tour” and winner of “The Amazing Race” Season 2.

“It was really exciting being able to represent USI in that way because I love this place,” Bradley said. “Being able to share it with that national platform was a really cool experience.”

Alex Boylan, executive producer and host of “The College Tour,” said students “know their story better than anyone else.”

Boylan said he was inspired to do “The College Tour” after trying to help his niece decide where to go to college. He wanted to provide a free way for potential students to see different college campuses across the nation.

All episodes of “The College Tour” are free to view on thecollegetour.com. The seasons are also released on Amazon Prime and other streaming platforms.

When choosing universities to feature, Boylan said “The College Tour” is looking for diversity and a great story to tell. He said they chose to film an episode about the university because “this team, this community here resonated with our partnership team.”

The university community has a family atmosphere Boylan said. “The people in the community here are so kind and so nice and genuine.”

Boylan was on campus Nov. 2 and filmed his segments for “The College Tour” episode as well as filmed a “Coffee with the President” segment with President Ronald Rochon.

“Coffee with the President” is a new digital series that will be a part of “The College Tour” where Boylan has a candid conversation with university presidents over coffee. The segment is filmed on Boylan’s iPhone and is an unedited conversation with the president.

Boylan said Rochon’s is “probably the best one yet.”

The video series “Coffee with the President” has not been released yet. Boylan said he was not sure exactly where or how the video would be released.

“The College Tour” episode featuring the university will be available in Spring 2022.

Foster Campus for Business and Innovation, Tran gives insight into how faculty invest in students at Baylor, creating an academic experience that propels students to excellence. President Livingstone is featured in one of the University’s sacred spaces on campus, Elliston Chapel, where she shares how Baylor, grounded in its Christian mission, provides world-class academics, big-time athletics, a fun and active student life and more.

Speaking of championship athletics, Coach Scott Drew – who led Baylor’s men’s basketball team to the 2021 NCAA championship – drops by McLane Stadium, with championship trophy in hand, to catch up with De La Garza about cheering on the Bears across all 19 varsity sports.

“You got your head coach of the national champions on the episode. That’s pretty amazing!” Boylan said. “What stands out at Baylor, besides the fact that you get this amazing Christian education on a beautiful campus in a fantastic location, is your traditions. Some of the oldest, not only in the state of Texas but in the country, like Homecoming. And when you see what Baylor does for Christmas and for Homecoming and when freshmen [in the Baylor Line] run out on the football field, I don’t know if there’s a better story out there, how every new class gets to be a part of those traditions and how special that is.”

Season two of The College Tour is now available on Amazon Prime TV and all episodes are available on The College Tour’s own app and website. The Baylor episode and each segment also are available at www.baylor.edu/tour.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — An Amazon Prime series that allows students to virtually visit different colleges and universities made a stop in Rhode Island over the summer.

The University of Rhode Island will be featured in the second season of “The College Tour.” The episode premieres on Thursday, Nov. 18, and is also available on URI’s website.

Each episode focuses on a specific school and has perspectives from students, faculty and alumni.

“College visits can cost upwards of $3,000 per school, which puts them out of reach for many students and families,” producer Alex Boylan said. “We are leveling the playing field and providing a free, easy and fun way to tour some of the best schools across the country.”

“The College Tour is the show you wished you had when applying for colleges in high school,” Boylan added.

URI’s episode features students and alumni Sarah O’Sullivan, Joel Roache, Kate Dubois, Brian Martin, Alana Parrott, Adam Blakemore, Emma Dallaire, Sonika Tahiliani, Peyton Thiel and Jasmine Leal. They discuss everything from academic opportunities to athletics and even the local beach scene.

“I think the show did a really good job of showing what you can’t show on a tour. For instance, you can’t take visitors out on a boat during a campus tour – and we did that in this show,” said O’Sullivan, a 2021 marine biology graduate student.

TV show to highlight USI, UE in upcoming season

By Daniel Baldwin, 14 News | November 2, 2021

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Both USI and UE are set to feature in season four of “The College Tour,” a show which highlights life on campus for different schools across the country.

USI senior David Bradley was not surprised the show chose to highlight life at his school.

“It has such a beautiful campus,” said Bradley. “The faculty and staff here care. You’re not just a number. It’s small enough to know you and big enough to grow you.”

Alex Boylan, the host of the show, says he chose USI because of the people on campus.

“We’re constantly looking for great stories,” said Boylan. “And the biggest thing about USI is the people. This is a different type of university. People matter.”

Bradley, making his television debut, says he felt honored to help represent USI.

“It’s nerve-wracking,” said Bradley. “But it means a lot to share USI’s story with this large platform.”

The USI senior says when you see him on camera, it will be him speaking from the heart.

“I did get to write my script,” said Bradley. “It had to go through approval process, but I did get to write it.”

Season four of the show has not been released yet, but you can watch previous episodes on Amazon Prime.
