An Accelerated Opportunity: The Master’s in Five Experience with Elizabeth

Segment #8 from Drew University

Transcript

Say hello to Elizabeth, a senior who is already starting a graduate teaching program while completing her major in History and a minor in Environmental Justice. She’s excited to share her journey in the classroom and how she finds time for fun on campus. Take it away, Elizabeth.

– Thanks, Alex. Since I was six years old, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I taught my dolls everything I was learning in school. So when looking for a college, it was important for me to find a school with a program that I could get my bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in teaching in five years. The BAMAT teaching program at Drew University has guided, mentored, and given me many opportunities. There are student teaching experiences and education department helped me get my substitute certification, so I’ve already had opportunities to grow in real classrooms. This past semester, my professor challenged my thinking and encouraged me to consider becoming a reading specialist, which I’m excited to explore. While I came to Drew for the teaching program, I fell in love with life as a Drew student. The small class sizes and work opportunities allowed me to create a community of my favorite people and familiar faces. When I see a poster for bingo, which is huge here at Drew, I know I can go alone and find a friendly face to laugh with as I lose every round with my terrible luck. While I grew up only 10 minutes away, I chose to live on campus so I could experience everything Drew has to offer. From late night snack runs to hammocking in the forest, and who wouldn’t want to live with all their best friends. We have dinner every night, randomly study together at 10:00pm, but don’t worry, mom and dad, I do sleep. Anyway, I’m so grateful I chose Drew University and had the opportunity to meet my best friends, find some amazing mentors who support my dream career and make a home for myself. Well, that’s all from me. Back to you, Alex.

– Thank you, Elizabeth. How great is it that Drew has programs where you can get your Master’s degree started while finishing your Bachelor’s? What a way to launch your career and follow your passions. Best of luck on your journey, Elizabeth. Take care.
