College of Education with Arnecia

Segment #4 from Eastern Michigan University

Transcript

Let’s meet Arnecia. She’s a first generation college student with a passion for teaching. Thanks to EMU’s College of Education’s distinguished curriculum and opportunities for hands-on experience. Arnecia tells us how she is better prepared for making a difference in young children’s lives. Tell us more, Arnecia.

– Thanks for the introduction, Alex. Ever since I was a child, I had a deep interest in children and education. Over the years, of course, I always changed my mind about what I wanted to be when I grew up, but deep in my heart, I knew being a teacher was my true passion. As the oldest teacher education institution in Michigan, Eastern Michigan University has played a crucial role in shaping educators who impact future generations through their classrooms. The rigorous curriculum and high expectations set by the university has prepared me well for a profession in teaching. The opportunity to have positive relationships with my professors, take insightful classes and have hands-on experiences in the education field has been so helpful in my preparation for making a difference in young children’s lives and learning. I’ve already spent 132 hours applying the knowledge from my classes to my pre-student teaching experiences such as the Children Institute on campus and various elementary schools in the community. As a first generation student, TRIO student support services and McNair scholars have significantly impacted my college experience by going above and beyond to ensure I have access to the necessary support in my academic career. I’m able to engage in mentoring, tutoring, events, conferences, and seminars. I’ve had opportunities to travel to places like Seattle, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia for cultural engagement in academic conferences. At EMU, I’ve even had the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research. I’m excited to be a part of the EMU community and to contribute to the legacy of excellence in education. Knowing that I have a community of people cheering me on, motivates me to continue chasing my dream. Throwing it back to you, Alex.

– How inspiring, Arnecia. It’s great to hear how EMU has supported you, not only as a first generation college student, but also in achieving your dreams to contribute to the world of education. Keep on going above and beyond, Arnecia, and we are sure you’ll achieve all that you want to achieve. Thanks again.
